Beninese singer-songwriter, actress, and activist, Angelique Kidjo who is soulful, energetic and noted for her diverse musical influences and creative music videos is our African Queen this month.
In 2007, Time magazine called her “Africa’s premier diva”. She has collaborated with Dave Matthews and the Dave Matthews Band, Kelly Price, Alicia Keys, Branford Marsalis, Ziggy Marley, Philip Glass, Peter Gabriel, Bono, Carlos Santana, John Legend, Herbie Hancock, Josh Groban, Dr John, the Kronos Quartet, Yemi Alade, Cassandra Wilson and Indonesia’s pop star Anggun. Her hit songs include “Agolo”, “We We”, “Adouma”, “Wombo Lombo”, “Afirika”, “Batonga“, and her version of “Malaika“.
In case you are wondering where she gets her inspiration and strength from, here’s a tip- She relaxes by doing a lot of gardening in her spare time and harvests loads of fruits, vegetables and plants for herself from that activity. Very refreshing.
Angelique Kidjo’s tribute to Cuban singer Celia Cruz was released on April 19, 2019. It is produced by David Donatien and features Tony Allen, Meshell Ndegeocello and the Gangbe Brass Band. The Guardian has called the album “magnificent” and The Financial Times gave it 5 stars. The album includes songs spanning all of Celia Cruz’s career reinvented with an Afrobeat feel.
Angelique Kidjo won the Grammy Award for “Best World Music Album” for CELIA on January 27, 2020.
With exhilarating performances from this living legend, there is definitely more greatness to come.
